App DesigniOS/AndroidPrototyping

01 — Overview

A client required a mobile application design that would provide their users with a native-feeling experience on both iOS and Android platforms, while maintaining consistent brand identity and smooth performance.

02 — The Challenge

Designing for two distinct platform ecosystems (iOS and Android) while maintaining visual consistency. The app needed to handle complex user flows without overwhelming users, and required careful consideration of accessibility, offline capabilities, and performance constraints.

03 — Research

I analysed 12 competing apps across both platforms, identifying best practices and common usability issues. User interviews with 10 potential users revealed that onboarding complexity and navigation depth were the top concerns. Platform-specific design guidelines (Material Design and Human Interface Guidelines) were studied extensively.

04 — UX Process

I created a unified navigation model that respects platform conventions while maintaining brand consistency. User flows were mapped for all 8 primary tasks. Wireframes were created in parallel for iOS and Android, with shared components where platform patterns aligned.

05 — UI Design

A comprehensive mobile design system was created with platform-specific components that feel native on each OS while sharing a unified visual language. Micro-interactions were designed for key workflows — swipe actions, pull-to-refresh, and haptic feedback patterns.

06 — Testing & Iteration

Prototype testing with 15 users across both platforms validated the navigation model. A/B testing of onboarding flows showed the simplified version increased completion from 60% to 85%. Accessibility testing with screen readers confirmed WCAG 2.1 AA compliance.

07 — Final Solution

A comprehensive mobile design system with platform-specific components, intuitive navigation patterns, micro-interactions for key workflows, and a component library for efficient development handoff.

08 — Outcome

App store rating of 4.7/5 stars. User onboarding completion rate of 85%. Average session duration increased by 40%. Development time reduced by 30% with design system.

09 — What I Learned

This project taught me that cross-platform design is about finding the balance between consistency and platform familiarity. Users expect iOS apps to feel like iOS apps and Android apps to feel like Android apps — the brand should unify, not override.
